Glendinning's keynote address was given at the 4th biennial conference of the International Rebecca West Society, in London, September 18-19, 2009. The keynote was given on September 18.
Victoria Glendinning is a biographer, critic, broadcaster, and novelist. She is president of English PEN and was awarded a CBE in 1998. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and holds honorary doctorates from the universities of Southampton, Ulster, Dublin, and York. Her acclaimed biographies include Rebecca West: A Life (1987); Elizabeth Bowen: Portrait of a Writer (1977); Edith Sitwell: A Unicorn Among Lions (1981); and Leonard Woolf (2006). Two of her biographies, Vita: The Life of Vita-Sackville-West (1983) and Trollope (1992), won the Whitbreat Biography Award.
